Trump throws a tantrum: Cancels Denmark visit
Less than two weeks before he was scheduled to arrive in Copenhagen President Donald Trump has postponed the visit after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed his proposal to buy Greenland as ‘absurd’.
In a tweeted message early this morning (Danish time) he wrote:
“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.” He continued, “The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!”
A White House official confirmed to CNN that the entire trip to Denmark is being scrapped.
The surprise cancellation also embarrassed US Ambassador to Denmark Carla Sands who only a few hours earlier had tweeted that the embassy is “ready for the POTUS (President of the United States) @realDonaldTrump visit!”
The trip had already been racked with controversy. After confirming his interest in buying Greenland on Sunday the president then caused confusion by saying he didn’t know whether he would be coming to Denmark, despite being personally invited by Queen Margrethe. Since then he appears to have reacted angrily to the prime minister’s statement on Monday that “Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland.”
The president muddied the waters even more, Monday, when he sent a meme of the golden Trump International Hotel of Las Vegas rising from the Greenland, accompanied by the message: “I promise not to do this to Greenland!”
Trump had been expected to participate in a series of bilateral meetings and meet with business leaders.
