Crisis shelters turn away abused women
4,561 abused women were denied help at crisis shelters last year due to a lack of space.
Director of the National Association of Female Crisis Centers Lene Johannesson attributed the rise to the increased media focus on abuse. “Many women need a nudge to get help, even if it’s just to help them understand that what they are going through is abuse,” she told Politiken.
The Social Democrats and Red/Green Alliance called the numbers ‘extremely disturbing’, and GREVIO, the EU advocate for victims of domestic violence, claimed Denmark is falling short of it’s international commitments.
“The government needs to take responsibility and get to the root of the problem” said the Social Democrats’ spokesman for gender equality Rasmus Horn.
Minister for Children and Social Issues Mai Mercado said she’s monitoring the issue closely, but stopped short of committing more funding on the grounds that the government is helping victims in other ways.
